Saving Outlook 2016 e-mail as .Eml

Microsoft Outlook 2016 emails exist in Microsoft's proprietary .pst and .msg file formats.  While migrating Outlook 2016 email, you might want to convert your emails to .eml file format, an open specification file format (RFC-822) that is used by nearly every non-Microsoft email client and service, including Thunderbird and Gmail.

Microsoft Outlook 2016 has a limited ability to export email messages. It can save individual messages to Text (.txt), Outlook Template (.oft), Outlook Message Format (.msg), and the newer unicode Outlook Message Format (also .msg).

Outlook 2016 does not natively support e-mail to .EML export.

While Outlook 2016 does not support saving e-mail to to .eml format, this can be accomplished within Outlook by using the MessageExport add-in by Encryptomatic LLC.  MessageExport integrates with the Microsoft Outlook menu system, making it easy to select and export email to .eml format.

In addition to .eml, MessageExport brings many other formats to Outlook 2016.  Options include exporting email as .csv, .pdf, .mbox, gif, .odt, and more.  Export formats, including .eml, are chosen from the MessageExport drop down list.

Select 'Export To EML' from the list.

After the .Eml export format is selected,  choose the e-mail you need to convert to .eml.  E-mail messages are highlighted from Outlook 2016's mail list.  Type Ctrl-A to select all e-mail messages in the Outlook 2016 mail list or hold the Windows Control key to pick and choose individual e-mails.

After you have chosen the e-mails, click MessageExport's "Send" button to start the e-mail to .eml conversion process.

While the export process is working, you may be asked to choose a folder to contain the .eml files.

There is much more that you can do with your Outlook 2016 emails when MessageExport is installed. Try editing the any of the export profiles. You can customize how MessageExport works. Try making changes to how MessageExport applies file names.  You can also use MessageExport's auto-export timer to run the .eml export profile operation a specific folder to run it on a recurring basis.

Download a free trial of MessageExport. The trial runs for 15 days, after which you can still continue to use MessageExport to save individual files to .eml format.
